NPT stands for National Pipe Tapered, which is a U.S. standard for tapered threads widely used on pipes and fittings for over 100 years.
NPT connections utilize thread deformation, creating a metal-to-metal seal where the threads of the connectors interlock. This design is optimal for single assembly applications but is not recommended for connections that will be frequently assembled and disassembled, as repeated use can lead to wear on the threads due to deformation.

Advantages:
- Are readily available
- Popular
- Simple assembly without flaring of tubes, sleeves, or seals or o-rings NPTF and NPSM Thread Styles
Disadvantages:
- Not suitable for very high pressure
- If re-assembled, sealing performance will decrease
- Thread lubricant may cause system contamination
