What are SAE flanges?
You can find flange connections in most demanding mobile equipment because flange connections has high resistance to loosening and can bear high pressure and shock.
The acronym SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers. SAE flanges are also known as Code 61 flanges or Code 62 flanges and they conform to the standards SAE J518/ ISO 6162.
What are SAE flange sets?
A complete SAE flange set comprises of two flange clamps, two flanges, one O-ring, four bolts, four nuts and four spring washers. The two flange clamps can both be one-piece flange clamps or they can be one one-piece flange clamp with one split flange clamp. One of the two flanges is a flat side flange and the other is an o-ring side flange. There is a groove seat for a rubber o-ring on the o-ring side flange. When the four bolts are tightened after being placed through the flange clamps, the o-ring is compressed well into the groove between the two flanges. It then creates a seal and now the coupling is impermeable to the fluid. The clamping load is also distributed over the four bolts making it hard for loosening in any direction.
